Sixteen people killed, dozens injured following Sydney’s shooting
The attack occurred Sunday evening at the city’s iconic beach. Online video footage showed the assailants firing at large crowds, causing hundreds of people to flee in panic as emergency services rushed to the scene.
Police later confirmed that 16 individuals had died and 29 others were injured, including two officers. Authorities stated at a news conference that the incident is being treated as a terrorist attack, noting that explosives were found in a vehicle linked to one of the shooters.
Earlier reports indicated that one of the gunmen was among the dead, while the second attacker was apprehended and remains in critical condition. New South Wales Health Minister Ryan Park confirmed on Monday that the total death toll stands at 16, including a child, though it was not immediately clear if this figure includes the gunman killed at the scene.
The shooting deeply shocked the local community, occurring during the first night of Hanukkah—a significant Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, traditionally celebrated with public gatherings, family events, and the lighting of candles over eight nights.
Videos captured by bystanders and shared online reportedly show police apprehending the shooters. Other clips show crowds fleeing the beach, and one viral video appears to depict a bystander disarming one of the gunmen before police arrived.
